F1 Driver Lewis Hamilton asks Mercedes for Vegan cars

Lewis Hamilton, multiple world champion Formula 1 and factory driver for Mercedes, has asked the German brand to stop using animal materials in his cars.

Hamilton has been following a vegan diet since 2017. He is now trying to convince Mercedes Benz to no longer use the leather of animal origin in his models worldwide. “Mercedes-Benz is a huge company and I have a phone call with the CEO later today to discuss how we can work to remove all the leather used in the cars,” said Hamilton to the Malaysian magazine The Edge.

Hamilton claims to be part of a system that helps heal the world and do something positive for the future. He is extremely positive about his transfer, I feel better than ever, both physically and mentally. I felt mentally strong the year before, but physically I also took a big step and that was due to the decision to change my diet, “he told Motorsport.com in 2017. This year he extended his plea for veganism by producing the documentary The Game Changers about the relationship between diet and exercise.

Mercedes would not be the first car manufacturer that no longer uses animal leather in its cars. Tesla first introduced synthetic leather as an option for the Model X in 2016, and since 2017 the Model S is no longer available with animal leather. Audi also wants to deliver leather replacement material on the electric e-Tron and Bentley is studying leather that comes from mushrooms for the luxury Bentayga SUV.
