Benjamin Netanyahu is the Prime Minister of Israel. He is the president of the Likud Party. Netanyahu has been the Prime Minister of Israel (PM of Israel) since 2009. Before this, he had served as the Prime Minister from 1996 to 1999. 

Netanyahu is the longest-serving PM in Israeli history. Netanyahu considers India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi his close friend. 69-year-old Netanyahu was born on 28 October 1949 in Tel Aviv. Netanyahu lived in the US with his family between 1956 and 1958 and again from 1963 to 1967. Here he (Benjamin Netanyahu) studied at Cheltenham High School after this Netanyahu returned to his country to join the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). 

According to the information given on the website of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, he joined the Elite Commando Unit of IDF. At this time, he was 18 years old. He played a role in several primary operations. Benjamin Netanyahu played a crucial role in leaving the hostages of the hijacked Sabina Airlines aircraft at Ben-Gurion Airport. He was also injured during this operation. Netanyahu retired after six years as captain, after which he studied at MIT in Boston and got a B.Sc. Of M.Sc in Architecture and Management Studies.

In 1984, Netanyahu was appointed Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations and remained in that position for four years. After returning to Israel in 1988, Benjamin Netanyahu entered the political arena. He was elected a member of the Parliament Knesset by the Likud Party. He served in this post for four years. Benjamin Netanyahu has written several books in Hebrew and English, some of which have been translated into Russian, French, Arabic, Japanese and other languages. His notable publications include Terrorism: How the West Can Win and a Durable Peace: Israel and Its Place Among the Nations.

First prime minister

Formed in 1993, Netanyahu was elected the president of the Likud party and the prime ministerial candidate in 1993. In the direct primary elections to an Israeli Prime Minister in 1996, Benjamin Netanyahu defeated Simeon Perez and became the ninth Prime Minister of Israel. He remained the Prime Minister till 1999. After completing his term as Prime Minister, Netanyahu served as a business advisor to Israeli high-tech companies. He returned to politics in 2002 and took over as foreign minister from November 2002 to February 2003. After this, he was also the Finance Minister till 2005.

Netanyahu has remained in the prime minister’s position since
2009, following the 18th Knesset elections in February 2009, Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as prime minister on March 31, 2009. On 18 March 2013, Netanyahu formed the 33rd government of Israel. On 14 May 2015, he created the 34th government as Prime Minister. He also held the portfolios of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Communications, and Regional Cooperation. Netanyahu took charge as Defense Minister following the resignation of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman on 14 November 2018.
