Trends in Fashion: What we have seen this year and what we will see in 2020

When the end of the year is approaching, some give them a mental review of everything they have experienced these last 365 days. This modus operandi also applies to other disciplines such as the fashion industry. The trends, more and more ephemeral and volatile, are the first to evolve and it is one of the fields most studied by sociologists understood in fashion.

This 2019, marked mainly by movements such as sustainability – many brands have carried out initiatives for ethical consumption with the environment – and inclusiveness – with a series of appeals against the lack of representation of diversity in the industry – has been the year of exaggerated romanticism.

Romanticism and streetwear

According to the study The Year in Fashion, published by the specialized search engine Lyst, searches for hair accessories decorated with pearls, tulle skirts and babydoll dresses increased significantly during the spring. On the other hand, clothing has been relaxed by imposing streetwear and sportwear. This year, users spent an average of 170 euros on a pair of new shoes. Off-White was the most sought after brand of the year.

Fashion for survival

It was also the year of the tie-dye print , the neon colors and the resurgence of the 90s, with short tops, lingerie dresses and square toe heels. In contrast, fashion also served as a shield. A period marked by political turbulence, marches and altercations, users took refuge in fashion for survival. Cargo pants, utility shirts or a high demand for fanny packs are the main arguments. Sales of hiking boots increased by 73% in September.

From the future

This 2020 comes to fashion with futuristic doses. With the preparation for the launch of four Mars missions, the testing phase of the Space X reusable rocket and a new generation of spacecraft with the human crew, the fashion will become galactic. As already seen in the proposals for the next spring-summer season, the holographic fabrics and the Matrix-style clothes will triumph.

Japan will be very present in the industry. With the great forecasts of influxes of foreign spectators that are expected in the next Olympic Games next summer in Tokyo, the street style of the islands will be more present than ever.

Committed Messages

Political fashion

Fashion will become increasingly political, that is, we will see more and more styling with political messages from politicians, brands and establishments themselves. As for the trend of micro-bags, Lyst predicts that the size XL shopper bags, those that stormed in the 2000s, will return strongly.
