The Witcher Season 2: Release Date, Plot, Cast and Everything We Know So Far

One of the most popular streaming shows in the world and the second most popular series of 2019, The Witcher, will have a second season. The second season was announced even before the release of the first show and the immense popularity of the first season has shown that it was the right decision to take. The Witcher is a Netflix series based on the book series of the same name written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski.

Release Date of The Show:

the exact release date for the season has not been announced yet. Netflix has renewed the second season for the series in 2019 even before the series had premiered. It was announced that the production will start in 2020 and the eight-episodes second season will hit the screen in 2021. Filming for the second season began in February 2020 in London, Scotland, and parts of Eastern Europe.

Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, during a Reddit AMA, stated, “We don’t yet have a target launch date for S2, past 2021. We don’t want to rush the product. That doesn’t benefit anyone.”

The plot of The Witcher Season 2:

The executive producer of the series Tomek Bagiński told NME that the second season will be much more straightforward since the main characters’ narratives have already been aligned. He said, “It’s more streamlined because all the three storylines are now in the same timeline”, so fans do not have to worry about getting confused about the timelines. The first season was more about the set up so that the viewers understand the world of the show, the second season, however, focuses more on the storytelling. Some new LGBTQ+ characters will also be introduced in the new season.

The first season was adapted from two collections of short stories, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, and was a prequel to the upcoming events. According to Lauren S. Hissrich, the creator of the show, the second season will be based on the main book. She also stated that Ciri will take the center stage in the upcoming season. When asked for a teaser on season 2 Hissrich replied, “Without spoilers, I will say that there’s a crop of new monsters, a new cost to magic, and new and unexpected pairings of our favorite characters.”

The Witcher’s Cast:

The main cast of the first season will be returning in the second season as well. The lead role of Geralt of Rivia will be played by HanryCavill. He will be joined by:

  • Freya Allan as Ciri
  • Joey Batey as Jaskier

Game of Thrones star Kristofer Hivju will join as the new cast member and will play the role of Nivellen. Other newcomers included in the second season are:
