“Fashion fades, style is eternal” said fashion behemoth Yves Saint Laurent. Nothing can be truer than this statement. Fashion is known to be fluctuating: what is ‘In’ today will be ‘Passé’ tomorrow. Style, however, never goes out of fashion, pun intended! Karan Oberoi also known as KO, is a leading fashion model and reigning Instagram sensation from India who swears by this. K.O. is known in the Indian fashion world for his vast body of work, that includes having worked with and walked the ramp for the biggest fashion brand names in the country like Rohit Bal, Arjun Khanna, Rajesh Pratap Singh and Shantanu & Nikhil. He has even walked for every conceivable fashion week in India, be it Lakme India Fashion Week, Wills India Fashion Week, Beach Resort Fashion Week, India Couture Week and GQ nights. His style statement is minimalistic and classic and he is here to help all you fashion-handicapped men of the world!

  1. Fit it up – Try your best to get a few tailored pieces into your wardrobe. A customized suit, a few made-to-order shirts are all it takes to discover a whole new you.

  2. Layering is key– Problem areas are normal. The trick is to camouflage it well. Use blazers and lightweight sweaters over shirts to cover up all those unseemly bulges.

  3. Keep it classic – Always load up on the classics – well-fitted denims, a few pairs of tailored (or at least altered to fit) trousers in shades of black, brown, grey and navy, solid coloured tees, shirts in white and blue. When in doubt, you can always fall back on these to save the day.

  4. Widen footwear options – While formal shoes and sneakers will weather you through most storms, be brave and try out varied options. Loafers, boots, suedes, neutral sneakers, oxfords, brogues – the choices are many. “Don’t be afraid to experiment!” asserts Karan Oberoi.

  5. Embrace prints and bold colours – While stripes and checks are fail-safe, try and introduce unconventional prints to your wardrobe. Nothing like a quirky pattern to jazz up your ensemble! Make bright colours your best friends – pair it off with a neutral shade and you’re good to go.

  6. Accessorize – Learn what kind of watches go with what type of looks (metallic and classic with formal, edgier ones with casual) and stock up on them as and when you can. Take a trip down the wild side and try on leather or even simple-beaded bracelets every once in a while. However, remember to NEVER go overboard.

  7. Isolate Active Wear – Keep your active wear ONLY for the gym. Resist the urge to pass off gym clothes as regular wear. “As someone who takes fitness very seriously, a majority of my wardrobe is definitely dedicated to gym wear but I have a non-negotiable rule of wearing them only when I am working out. Wearing gym wear outside of the gym gives off the message that you are too lazy to make an effort and that is certainly not a vibe you want to give off!”, says Karan Oberoi, K.O.

  8. Ethnic is Awesome – If you’re someone who is not sure how to pull of an ethnic look, go the fusion route. Dhoti pants with a structured bandhgala jacket that stops at mid-thigh is one example. Always have a few options so that you don’t have to go shopping frantically at the last minute.

Karan Oberoi is famous for having created waves in the fashion industry. His trust as model has taught him well, and made him a style icon of sorts. Of course, his strapping physique and chiselled good looks are a major bonus, but he believes anybody can turn heads if they groom themselves well. Take a leaf (or two) out of KO’s fashion dossier, and we guarantee more than a few double takes the next time you step out!
