Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg known as Pete Buttigieg is an American politician born to Jennifer Anne Montgomery and Joseph A. Buttigieg on January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana. He is the only child of the family and got his early education from  St. Joseph High School, he then went on to graduate from Harvard College and later studied at Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship. He was the intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve from 2009 to 2017. He served as the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana from 2012 to 2020. On April 14, 2019, he launched his campaign for the 2020 United States presidential elections.

Pete Buttigieg came out as gay in June 2015 in the piece of South Bend Tribune. Buttigieg is the first openly gay person to be Indiana’s elected executive. He is also the first gay Democratic presidential candidate and if elected would be the first openly gay as well as the youngest-ever president of the United States. Pete Buttigieg published his autobiography ‘Shortest way home’ in 2019 describing his journey to becoming the mayor of South Bend, Indiana and the decisions he has had to take during his time in the office. He is fluent in several languages including Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, French, Maltese, Norwegian and Italian and plays piano and guitar.

Military Service

He was the intelligence officer in the United States Navy Reserve from 2009 to 2017, attaining the rank of a lieutenant. He was deployed in Afghanistan in 2014 for seven months.

Buttigieg won the John F. Kennedy New Frontier Fenn Award in 2015. He was also awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal during his military service. In 2014 he was named Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow. As a youngster, he won John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum‘s Profiles in Courage essay contest and got to meet and receive the award from the Kennedy family in Boston in 2000.
