Never be added to a WhatsApp group unsolicited again? Now you can

Many WhatsApp users will recognize it: suddenly they are added to a group conversation where everyone also immediately starts chattering fanatically. Very annoying, but since last Wednesday the messaging service gives you the option to refuse these mandatory invitations in advance.

The option was already announced in April but was delayed after extensive testing of the feature among users in India. After a minor adjustment, refusing group conversations is now also available to Western users.

How does it work?

The option to refuse group calls can be found under the settings screen in the app. Then tap ‘Account’, ‘Privacy’ and then ‘Groups’. Here you will find three options: ‘Everyone’, ‘My contacts’ and ‘My contacts except’. By choosing ‘My contacts’, you will in advance refuse anyone you have not included in your contact list. With the option ‘My contacts except’ you can also refuse specific persons within your contact list. With ‘everyone’, nothing actually changes and everyone can invite you to a group conversation on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp currently does not offer an option to reject all group conversations in one fell swoop.
