Mommy Makeovers Especially Trendy in NYC

You know the women you see online who seem to magically bounce back after pregnancy? Sometimes that’s possible thanks to good genetics, and it could even be due to some skilled photo editing – but sometimes it’s because they got a mommy makeover. This name describes a flexible set of procedures that addresses many of the physical changes that women see after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

According to NYC mommy makeover specialist Dr. Schulman, a mommy makeover can have many benefits, but the main ones are psychological. Even though a new baby can bring a lot of joy, the mother also has to come to terms with drooping breasts, stretch marks, loose skin, and accumulated fat deposits. Many women report that they feel less in touch with their femininity even after some of those changes reverse on their own, but a mommy makeover can help them regain the body they want. That’s probably why mommy makeovers are so popular in NYC – they address the physical changes caused by pregnancy and breastfeeding to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy body.

What’s included in a mommy makeover?

There are three procedures that are most commonly included in a mommy makeover: a tummy tuck, a breast augmentation, and liposuction. Depending on the aesthetic goals of each woman, however, the mommy makeover could include a breast lift, a breast reduction, a thigh lift, or a circumferential abdominoplasty.

What are the requirements for a mommy makeover?

First, you’d need to be fairly healthy. Not in the sense that you need to be athletic and fit; it’s just that people with preexisting health conditions simply aren’t good candidates for invasive surgeries. Also, it’s recommended that smokers stop their habit before the procedure and during recovery; smoking inhibits blood flow, which slows healing and increases the risk of complications.

Second, you’d need to have at least two of the following characteristics caused by pregnancy:

  • Fat accumulation in certain areas like the back, hips, thighs, buttocks, or abdomen
  • Stretch marks on the thighs or lower abdomen
  • Separated or weakened abdominal muscles
  • Fat stores that hang from the abdomen
  • Oversized areolas or downward-pointing nipples
  • Drooping breasts
  • Breasts that have lost their shape or symmetry because of weight fluctuations

If you’ve experienced two or more of these changes and want to have them addressed through plastic surgery, you may be a candidate for a mommy makeover.

How much does a mommy makeover cost in NYC?

That’s a tricky question to answer; not only does the cost vary from surgeon to surgeon, but it’ll also depend on how many procedures you’re actually getting done. Even so, we do know that most mommy makeovers cost anywhere between $15,000 and $20,000. This type of cosmetic procedure is only rarely covered by insurance, so most people pay for it themselves. However, some plastic surgeons do offer financing options; if that’s something you’re interested in, make sure it gets discussed during the initial consultation.

What should you expect after getting a mommy makeover?

All the big surprises will probably come during recovery; a lot of women say that they really weren’t prepared for everything that occurs after getting a mommy makeover. This being the case, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You’ll need to clear your schedule for at least two weeks post-surgery. This means your work schedule, your weekly errand schedule, your house-cleaning schedule – anything that requires movement, basically. Even if you don’t want to be on total bed rest now, you will post-surgery, so you might as well prepare for it beforehand.
  • There’ll be a lot of pain. You didn’t just have one invasive procedure done; you had two, three, or maybe even four of them done! Even with the pain medication prescribed by your doctor, pretty much every movement will hurt for at least the first week.
  • There’ll also be a ton of swelling. This is your body’s reaction to the procedures, so while you shouldn’t freak out, you should also respect your body’s need for lots of rest. It’ll go down pretty rapidly in the first month, but it could take 6 to 12 months for it to totally disappear.
  • Compression garments will be a part of everyday life for a while.
  • You’ll have to avoid strenuous exercise or lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds for six weeks minimum. Yes, that includes your kids and the groceries. This is especially important if your abdominal muscles were repaired during the mommy makeover, as even lifting moderately heavy objects could separate the muscles all over again.
  • Get help lined up for as long as it takes you to recover. You might ask your partner to pick up some slack, bring in a couple of family members, or enlist some friends – whatever it takes. You’ll be severely limited for several weeks, and if you want your results to stick, you’ll need to respect those limitations.
  • Vigorous exercise is a bad idea, but some movement is recommended. Even as early as the day after surgery, you should at least walk to and from the bathroom. If you stop moving for too long, there’ll be an elevated risk of blood clots. Just a bit of movement every few hours, though, should prevent them from forming.
  • Getting a mommy makeover is a big deal, and you deserve the best results possible. It can be tempting to go for the “budget” offers, but remember that the only reason why they’re so much cheaper is because the doctor is cutting corners. For a lower-risk recovery and great results, you’ll want to pick a board-certified plastic surgeon who’s both experienced and professional.
  • Last of all, keep your eyes on the prize! If you get discouraged because your results aren’t showing up, just wait a while longer – they’re probably still hiding under the residual swelling.

The takeaway

Getting a mommy makeover can be a life-changing decision, but it’s a big commitment as well. Even so, that clearly hasn’t stopped women from NYC and all over the U.S. from getting one – and it shouldn’t stop you either!
