After you contact us
When you have let us know that you’re interested in becoming a foster parent, we will get back to you to find out a few details from you like for instance, if you have a spare room. After having a chat with you, we will make an appointment with you to meet you face-to-face. The process starts as soon as you apply to become a foster parent.
If we find you to be appropriate, we will invite you to fill out an application form. We will also ask your permission to get references and do statutory checks. We will then carry out a fostering assessment.
What the fostering assessment is all about
The fostering assessment is necessary to help us to find out whether or not you will be suitable as a foster parent. It is also a chance for you to show us the skills and qualities you have to offer a foster child in your care.
It is an extremely involved process, as we need to get together as much information about you as possible so that we can have an absolutely clear picture as to your lifestyle and experience. Our assessment of you helps us to be 100% sure that you will be able to give a foster child a home that is safe and secure, with a nurturing environment.
A social worker will then spend the next few months getting to know you and your family. The things they will talk to you about are your life and past relationships, personal interests, your childhood and your family, your health, as well as your work history.
The social worker will also discuss your support network with you and also visit your referees. Home safety and pet assessments, medical reports, DBS and residency checks will also be done. While you are being assessed, you will also need to attend workshops to improve your skills as a carer.
You will be invited to go before our independent fostering panel when the report is complete, for recommendations and approval.
