Biography

Charley Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi in March 1934. He was born in a poor family and was the son of sharecroppers. He served in the Army and then later moved to Montana. He pursued a musical career there and also became a professional baseball player.

He worked during the night at the smelting plant and played semi-professional baseball with a team. He worked hard to earn money. He was paid an extra $10 for singing the national anthem before the ceremony of games. He was also a singer at the local bars. Some music label producer noticed him at local bar gigs and in two years he signed a contract with RCA.

Charlie won many awards that included the Country Music Association’s entertainer of the year award. He released many musical hits that include “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin” and “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone“.

He moved to Nashville to pursue his musical career. He released his debut studio album titled “Country by Charley” and it was released in 1966. The album’s single “Just Between You and Me” entered the top 10 on the Billboard country charts.

Personal Life and Relationships

Charley was married to Rozene and the couple met during his baseball days. They got married in 1956 when Charley returned home from his Army basic training for a brief period of time. The couple had three children and were together married until he died in 2020.

Pride was suffering from a tumor on his vocal cord. In 1997 he underwent surgery and the tumor was surgically removed at the hospital of the University of Arkansas. Charley was a minority owner and signed a deal with the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball team.

Charley Pride passed away on December 12, 2020. He was 86 years at the time of his death. Earlier this year he had received the Country Music Associations Lifetime Achievement Award. Pride was affected by Covid-19 and the critics pointed out later that people in attendance at the award ceremony were without masks and it is highly likely that Pride got infected during the ceremony.
