The Austrian Parliament decided on a ban on headscarves for elementary school children. With the new law, for the on Wednesday evening, the deputies of the government coalition of the conservative ÖVP and the right-wing populist FPÖ voted in, will says “the Wearing of ideological or religious apparel, the veiling of the head is connected,” in the future.
The government has made it clear that the law is directed only against the Islamic headscarf – and not against the Jewish Kippa and the Patka of a Sikh.
Opposition sharply criticized the law
The education policy spokesman of the FPÖ, Wendelin Mölzer said, with the headscarf ban, a Signal should be set against the political Islam. The Austrian people’s party Deputy, Rudolf Taschner said, it is going to free Muslim girls from a “submission”. The Opposition agreed to almost a prohibition against the headscarf and accused the government of it, only to headlines and not to the child’s well-being.
The government had been given prior to the decision of Parliament that it expects complaints before the constitutional court. The law has no constitutional rank, because it was not adopted by a two-thirds majority. Austria’s Islam Association IGGÖ has criticized the headscarf ban in focus.
