She released her first album the same year which was titled “Spirituals” (1956). When she turned eighteen, she pursued a pop music career.
She moved to New York and helped her sign a deal with Columbia Records. Her single “Today I Sing the Blues entered the Top 10 of the Hot Rhythm & Blues Sellers chart at the number 1 spot. Be Long” was her first song that entered the Billboard Hot 100.
