Aretha Louise Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 25, 1942. He was a vocalist and a piano player, and her father worked as a Baptist minister. The family lived in Detroit, Michigan during Franklin’s childhood. Her mother moved to Buffalo but visited her other children in Detroit. Franklin began singing at a young age at her father’s church. She signed a recording deal with J.V.B. Records and released her first single with J.V.B. Records titled “Never Grow Old”. She released her first album the same year which was titled “Spirituals” (1956). When she turned eighteen, she pursued a pop music career.

She moved to New York and helped her sign a deal with Columbia Records. Her single “Today I Sing the Blues entered the Top 10 of the Hot Rhythm & Blues Sellers chart at the number 1 spot. Be Long” was her first song that entered the Billboard Hot 100.

Personal Life

Franklin had four children. She gave birth to her first two children when she was thirteen years old and fifteen years old. The kids were raised by her grandmother and sister. Franklin visited them often back in Michigan. She gave birth to her third child in 1964 with her then-husband. Her youngest child, Kecalf Cunningham, father was her road manager Ken Cunningham.

Franklin got married twice in her life. She got married to her first husband, Ted White, in 1961. They filed for their divorce in 1969. She got married to actor Glynn Turman and they parted ways in 1982. She got engaged to her longtime friend Willie Wilkerson but she later broke the engagement.
