For the first Time in almost seven years, Germany heads the security Council, starting from this Monday for a month the UN. Federal foreign Minister Heiko Maas takes over the presidency in New York by French foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

to understand The two countries have agreed to take their consecutive management periods, as the common “double-chair” for two months.

Germany belongs to the most important UN body since the beginning of the year for two years, and is one of ten exchange members. France, besides the United States, Russia, China and great Britain of the five permanent members with veto power. The security Council deals mainly with crisis management and peacekeeping.

Germany is leading up to the end of April, the meetings of the security Council and can help shape the agenda beyond the current crisis decisively and own topics. The Federal government has made, the issues of sexual violence against women in conflict as well as disarmament and arms control highlight.

Recently, Germany held in September 2012, the presidency of the security Council. In the coming summer, a further one-month period at the top of the panel is to follow. Germany is applying all eight years for a two-year membership in the security Council – so far, always with success.
