The government-appointed coal Commission meets today to what is perhaps crucial meeting. The 28-member panel could agree on a concept for the end of the electricity production from brown and hard coal in Germany.

It is expected to be long negotiations. It could also be a postponement until next week. Controversial especially, when and to what extent climate-damaging coal-fired power plants are to be switched off – just as a final exit date.

Before the meeting of the parties to environmental organizations increased the pressure and speed made in the area of climate protection as a condition for their approval. “From our point of view, the result of which depends, as before, hanging by a thread”, said the President of the nature protection ring, DNR, Kai Niebert, on Thursday. There had to be a real contribution to climate protection, Germany could adhere to the targets.
